Six Yards, guaranteed dutch design is a tribute to Vlisco textiles: more than hundred years old, born in Indonesia, designed in the netherlands, loved in West- and Central Africa, and designed in the West.
The exhibition examines the history of the factory and the stories about the fabrics, discusses the Dutch (post) colonial history, takes a look at the differences and similarities between West and non-Western cultures and raises questions about the concept of cultural identity. 'Six Yards' is curated by the artists 'collective Suze May Sho, which works on the interface between art, design and fashion.

' Upon entering the room, we found models lying on beds. Dresses and skirt were arranged from pillowcases; diagonally distorted draperies formed shirts, and pleated fabric was sewn into skirts. We took photos fanatically. We could have a close look at the clothes and see all the details. The girls on the beds had no make-up, and they did not seem to care about the wrinkles in their dresses or their dishevelled hair. Eventually, they started to rise one by one, and the show had begun. A very unique stage effect that capsized conventional shows, where you have to line up in a long queue and wait a long time for the opening and you don't even get to see the whole model's figure.'

' This architectural extraction is drawn from the real built world as it can be found in New York, Milan, Istanbul or Seoul. It generates associations with generic industrial spaces, underground car parks or even stage sets of futuristic movies. Structural elements, lights and materials are composed as if they were to define a place like a contemporary hotel lobby or an airport hallway. Viewed from the speed of fashion, architecture appears as a seasonal style and as a temporary experiment.'

JOFF: 'I love the way Raf Simons plays with references and archetypal shapes. For spring/summer 2011 he turned the inside out, merging inner and outer seams until it was impossible to tell which was which. The slim, elongated looks, as made for an army of adolescent boys, were for me pure Raf....
The film made by Pierre Debusschere emphasizes all the details of the collection, the camera is always roving, from east to west, up and down the boys and their garments. Zooming in and out, our perspective is distorted and slightly twisted, the images as much as the garments invite and encourage us to always deconstruct before we reconstruct.'

The fourth edition has a name!

Last Monday, in the midst of the pandemonium of international fashion weeks in New York, London, Milan and Paris, the press presentation of Arnhem Mode Biennale took place in the capital of the Netherlands, Amsterdam.
After months of keeping our lips sealed, artistic director JOFF had the privilege of revealing the theme of the fourth edition. In this newsletter we would like to inform you of the information we shared with the fashion press, including the shortlist of participating designers. This biennale promises to be a very special one, so buckle up and enjoy the ride!

Her name is Amber

Please welcome Amber. Fashion is Amber and Amber is fashion, a whimsical and fleeting phenomenon, whose personality is omnipresent in our society and whose influence we can barely escape. As hard as we may try to pin Amber down, there will always be an element of her that remains just out of reach: the sparkle, the glamour, the dream. She is as a mysterious femme fatale and we cannot help but follow her, lured by her charms and in the hope that she will bestow some of them on us.
On three locations – the epicenter in an old industrial plant of AkzoNobel, the Museum for Modern Art and the city center of Arnhem – we search for fashion’s true identity. Exhibitions, presentations, lectures and workshops focus on different traits of Amber’s wondrous persona and thus unravel the phenomenon of fashion.
In this quest AMB is supported by a large amount of national and international designers and artists. We are proud to announce that amongst others the following will participate: A.F. I was at the Royal College of Art earlier today, for the 2010 Graduate Show. A very good year I have to say: pretty much every graduate had that balance of creativity and technical skills that are the trademark of the RCA former students ( Christopher Bailey or, more recently, Soren Bach and Holly Fulton).

On the front row, a focused Hussein Chalayan and the super stylist Jane How were looking carefully, taking notes every now and then. Me? I was impressed with the overall quality of the manufacture plus some names really stood out for their clean design concept. I can play the scouting game, and bet on womenswear designers Simone Sommer, Nabil-El-Nayal, Marielle Van de Ven , Victoria Stone. And definitely on the the milliner Zara Gorman

Hij is één van de pioniers die Nederland internationaal op de kaart heeft gezet als modeland: modeontwerper Alexander van Slobbe (1959). Hij viert dit jaar zijn twintigjarig jubileum, maar is in Nederland nog een goed bewaard geheim. Reden voor het Centraal Museum om van 13 februari t/m 16 mei 2010 een grote tentoonstelling te wijden aan deze meester van de verfijnde, minimalistische ontwerpen en voortrekker van de typisch Nederlandse mode, Dutch Modernism. Bij de samenstelling en totstandkoming van de tentoonstelling ‘Stof tot nadenken’ is Van Slobbe zelf actief betrokken.

Stof tot nadenken
Alexander van Slobbe is wars van modegrillen. De modeontwerper heeft een onafhankelijke houding die nieuwsgierig maakt naar zijn denkwijze en de manier waarop zijn ontwerpen tot stand komen. ‘Stof tot nadenken’ toont dan ook niet alleen de uiteindelijke ontwerpen, maar doet de dynamiek en het creatieve proces van modevormgeving ervaren: Van Van Slobbes persoonlijke archief in de vorm van patronen, stofstalen, films en foto’s tot bestaande en nieuwe samenwerkingsverbanden met onder anderen Claudy Jongstra, Koninklijke Tichelaar Makkum, Marc Mulders en PUMA.

Dit jaar organiseert zij vier workshops waarin vormgevers, ambachtslieden en genodigden een gedekte tafel ontwerpen. Van tafelkleed tot servies. Displaying graphic design, fashion design, product design, fine arts, film, music, and photography, VANITAS becomes an eclectic collection of work.

Lenn Cox and JP Scheen came to know each other while attending the art academy ArtEZ in Arnhem where they both studied Fashion Design and graduated in 2007. Since then, they have joined forces in several ventures in which they have taken on the role of artists, collectioneurs, connectors, and creative organizers.
